DNC and CNC Editor
Boss just gave me the go ahead to get a DNC and editor system to setup our other 2 machines (MV45/40 Mori mill with YASNAC control, and Mori TL-40 lathe with a Fanuc controller). I have never hooked up a DNC system before so I am hoping for some pointers on whats good/bad or what to look for. On our new machine we have an ethernet connection through an FTP server so it doesn't necessarily need to be on the DNC system. I've got a budget of roughly $1,000 to get the software. I would really like to have drip feeding ability for the mill if possible. I am hoping to get something with editing capability. Was looking into Predator's DNC software that comes with the editor $700 for first machine and $200 for each one after, plus some cable. What do you guys suggest, and what insight do you have? I program by hand and with Mastercam if that makes a difference. Thank you very much!

Mastercam already has an editor and dnc capabilities built in, either through the mastercam editor or cimco edit.

Otherwise I use Machine Link from Control Link systems

We have had Cimco for about 3 years http://www.cimco-software.com/produc...scription.php3
It has never even hicupped. Flawless communication, simultaneous drip feed, 5 mills, 2 lathes, two wireEDM. We use it for communication only, create all programs in Master cam. Can't remember why we didn't use Mastercam communication. Would it have to go through a bunch of switch boxes? RJT www.progtool.net - Aluminum

I have seen the buttons in Mastercam to use the DNC, so what would I need then? Just to run cable from the machine to a converter box of somesort that is either on out ethernet or directly linked to my main computer, then set up the baud rates and some other stuff in the Mastercam Configuration Im guessing? Is the cimco edit in a chook? I guess I never noticed it

Link it to the computer, or switch box if using 2 machines. I think 'think' you can only do 1 at a time although, if you have 2 serial ports then maybe 2 at a time. You'll need a cable correctly configured for your machine and yes, set the baud, data bits and all the happy jazz and you'll be good to go. If you want to switch from the mastercam editor to cimco you'd do that in your configuration files. Cimco edit is *not* a chook. If you look in the Mastercam root directory here (McamX4commoneditorsCIMCOEdit5) you'll find it. It will run outside of mastercam also so you could put a shortcut on the desktop.Originally Posted by SchneiderMachineMastercam already has an editor and dnc capabilities built in, either through the mastercam editor or cimco edit.

Dave,
Thanks for all the help so far and the cost savings.
Where is a good source for the cable and switch boxes?
Also where can I find out how to configure the cable pins to transmit correctly? I assuming each machine is different, can I call Mori Seiki and they can send me a diagram or probably not for that old? Hopefully the baud rate is given in the parameters somewhere although I am sure these are low baud rate machines

The Onecnc DNC program is free. They also have detailed instructions on hooking up the cables for most controls.

Another vote for NCLink from OneCNC. I have been using it for years and never had a problem. I use it to just tranfer programs and also to drip feed when needed. It allows re-starting at a line number which is nice when you need to re-run a tool when drip feeding. I use it on a Mori MV40 mill, a Mori MV55 mill, a Mori SL15 Lathe (all Fanuc controls) and an Okuma Lathe.

I scrounge cables wherever I can from whoever I can. Your manual should tell you the pin outs. If your machine is older the baud should be around 9600, just guessin here mind youOriginally Posted by JMWorksDave,

The Onecnc solution is more user frendly than hyperterminal and notepad. I don't really see why you would pay for a DNC solution when there is a very good one available for nothing.

At this point I am only using DNC for file transfer, not drip feed, but onecnc nclink worked where another free program I tried would error out sporadically. Aside from the annoying ad you have to endure each time you run the program, it is a bargain... oh yeah, it's free... it IS a bargain.

Dave,
Does the Cimco Editor within Mastercam not support the graphical backplot functions of what I could buy from Cimco with Cimco Edit if I didn't have Mastercam? That is really what I am after, I wonder if not if I can update to the full package at a reduced price. Thanks! - Diamond

I use the free software from onecnc too. Never had any problems drip feeding. Easy to setup and use.
I use betatronics I232 setups for communications. No errors and can transmit and recieve up to the machines max baud rate up to 4000' of cable. I've been using them for a few years now with no problems. You tell gorden what kind of machine and control your using and he supplies you with everthing for a plug and play installation. He also has great customer support.
http://www.beta-a2.com/i232.html
2 port serial card so you don't need a pos switchbox. for 25 bux you can't beat it.

If you get (2) I232 setups from betatronics, and the free nc software from onecnc you will be well below your 1k budget.
Good luck. - Stainless

No, it does not. I'm not sure what the upgraded package costs. Check into it and see but, also check out NCPlot www.ncplot.com it does what your looking for plus it has transfer capabilities (only the purchased version) there is a free one to give you a taste of what it can do. I have NCPlot here and it is a fantastic program. I got it back when it was a beta program, it was much cheaper then. Keep in mind that the backplot function in ncplot is tool centerline.Originally Posted by JMWorksDave,

I have checked into NC plot before seemed to be pretty good set up but I am curious will it support live tooled lathes? We have a VTL with live tooling that I do alot of complex milling on that I want something to double check Mastercam but I am not forking over $3K+ for a true verify software. I will try to get a hold of Cimco and see what we can do there. Thanks!

Ok, NCPlot doesn't support live tooled lathes as far as I know. It does support 4 axis mills though. Cimco may be your best best so far but make sure your sitting down when you price it, just in case.
The verify in Mastercam is not showing you what you need to see??

Verify in Mastercam for Mill/Turn stuff is terrible. It's not that good for lathe even. Backplot seems to work fine for tracing the toolpath but a double check would be great, and there are still quite a few parts I code by hand since we are having a lot of trouble with our post that it would be handy to check on there and not have to spend so much time at the machine double checking or making changes.

We understand that DNC software can sometimes be expensive but the last thing you want is to buy more DNC software when all you want to do is edit CNC files while you're away from.
